Meet Mike Schierl,
Vice President of Southeastern Wisconsin Sales & Operations
Mike began his landscaping career working in the Schmalz Custom Landscaping & Garden Center in Appleton, WI as a summer intern. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture, Mike returned to Schmalz’s in a full-time capacity as part of their Design and Sales team. Mike built a solid Landscape foundation working under the direction of Luke Schmalz until December 2001.
Mike relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to start his family and spent the next 25 years at a large landscape firm located in Salem, Wisconsin. It was here that Mike was able to add business experience to the foundation that had been started years earlier with Luke. It wasn’t long, though, before Mike was reunited with the Schmalz family. In 2010, Nick Schmalz came to work with Mike in Salem, and they worked together for the next 3 years before Nick returned to Appleton to take the reins as the third-generation owner of Schmalz Custom Landscaping and Garden Center.
In April 2026, Mike returned to the family business where he started nearly 30 years ago, heading up Schmalz’s newest venture in Waterford, WI. This new venture will be focused on Landscape Design/Build in both the residential and commercial markets. Mike and his team are excited to continue the quality and creativity their customers have known since 1949.
