Budget: $250,000

Enhancing an already amazing lake view, providing plenty of room for outdoor entertaining and complementing the home’s interior style were the primary goals of this ambitious residential landscaping project.

Scope: This beautiful new construction home is situated on a bluff overlooking the northern shore of Lake Winnebago. The client came to Schmalz for design/build work on everything from driveway layout and patios to planting beds and lawn. The Schmalz team, headed up by Luke Schmalz and Dan Vechart, was excited to utilize significant grade change on the site for attractive retaining walls and multi-level patios perfect for gathering.

Challenges: The unique lake lot posed significant grade changes. This issue—along with the client’s request for multiple patio areas—brought about several challenges with regards to the size and number of patios as well as their orientation to the lake, efficient traffic flow, and overall aesthetic. Additionally, filling in the lot to ensure a well-graded lawn was time consuming. Schmalz looked at these challenges as opportunities to create a truly custom result.

Results: Planning began in February 2013 and construction was complete in August of that same year, more than meeting the client’s expectations and allowing them to get the most out of late summer in their attractive and functional new outdoor space. “This was a great project to design and build. I’m pleased to say that the client loves their yard and they are so glad they chose to work with us!” said Dan Vechart.

Why Schmalz: We bring unbeaten expertise in planning for this type of project, where design is crucial to providing the client with unique ideas. And maybe more importantly, expertise in planning how the project will progress so we can deliver on time and make good on our agreement with the client.
